We have started a mini series on Biblical Fasting. Last week we looked at what fasting was not and three types of fasts mentioned in Scripture. This week...

Fasting is Assumed by the New Testament. When Jesus spoke about fasting, He did not say if you fast, but when you fast (Matthew 6:16). Jesus assumes that Christians will fast. And from the rest of the books in the NT we know that they did.
Our first of 12 fasts for this year will be the third week of January. The theme is "Here am I".

Tim Hawkins

Tim Hawkins is coming to Erie. Grace Fellowship did a Live Nativity last weekend. We had 630+ people come through and over 210 cars. On Wednesday we had our annual Christmas dinner at the church. It is always a well attended event. 110 people came and we had a blast. Now we are making preparations for our Christmas Eve service. We are joining with Branch Fellowship for an awesome evening of worship and honor to our Savior Jesus Christ. If you are in the area please plan to come and celebrate with us.

Merry Christmas!

God's Throne is not Dependant on my Circumstance

Our youngest daughter Sophia has a seizure disorder. After hearing that question for many weeks and months I heard an answer I could live with.

If you were to order a drink at a restaurant and upon it's arrival you noticed that the color that you are used to was slightly skewed. It was unfamiliar at best. More than likely you would ask your server to explain the unusual coloration. What if the reply was, "I sneezed in it on the way over, sorry. But the ratio Clean to Dirty is still good." What is the ratio of Clean to Dirty? When it comes to our food I think we all agree, 100 percent clean. Ever been using the bathroom at a restaurant and notice an employee leave without washing? Not a fun situation.

What is our desire as Christians? Are we constantly asking Jesus to tolerate what we consider acceptable purity? The Bible says it best: Eph 5:3 - "But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people." As Christians let us strive for purity and don't ask Jesus to accept anything less.

Christians Being Christian

We have been working on our Live Nativity for the past two months at Grace Fellowship Church. It has been said that "many hands make the work light" and I agree with that. There is a Biblical principle involved with this thought.
While working as a church there is a witness of the power of Jesus' miracles. We are seeing people of all different backgrounds and talents coming together. As people in our community comment on how much work something like this takes there is a recognition of team work. I have a friend that called last night to tell me how excellent everything looks and how he may bring his family to both nights. This is where the church, the people in the building on Sunday, can demonstrate the miracle of serving Jesus. We can work together, set an example, and see others come to him.
I pray that this Christmas season you would be able to share the miracle Jesus has done in your life. MERRY CHRISTMAS.

What Christians Should Believe

Part of my studying I do is listening to other pastors. I like to hear what God is laying on their hearts to teach. I enjoy receiving from a good teacher. I get inspiration to either research what they are teaching or learn from their mistakes. One pastor that I have grown fond of over the past year is Mark Driscoll. He ministers in Seattle, Washington and has a passion for his city that I have not seen in any pastor, minister, preacher, or evangelist. He did a series a few months back on Doctrine that was amazing to listen to. I shared the material with my elders and then taught similar material on a Wednesday night for 9 weeks. I still have 4 weeks left and our congregation is loving it. Here are some of the points from week one.

There is only One God.
• “. . . the LORD is God; there is no other besides him” (Deut. 4:35).
• “. . . there is no god beside me” (Deut. 32:39).
• “. . . you alone are God” (Ps 86:10).
• “Before me no god was formed, nor shall there be any after me” (Isa. 43:10).
• “I am the LORD, and there is no other, besides me there is no God” (Isa. 45:5).
• “. . . the King of ages, immortal, invisible, the only God” (1 Tim. 1:17).
• “. . . there is one God” (1 Tim. 2:5).

All other gods are demonic false gods.
• “. . . the only true God” (John 17:3).
• “They sacrificed to demons that were no gods” (Deut. 32:17).
• “. . . what pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons” (1 Cor. 10:20).

The Gospel of Jesus

While Alexa and I were praying and watching our Sophia go through her seizures these past two weeks people have asked "How do you handle it?". Not wanting to be pious or religious in my answer I would just say that we are leaning on Christ. I recently finished a class at Grace Fellowship called "Doctrine - What Christians Should Believe". This class was inspired by a series that Mark Driscoll of Mars Hill Church in Seattle, Washington did of the same name. In listening to his class and reading a lot of the recommended material I felt it was something that needed to be shared with our congregation. On Monday I will begin posting on this topic. I look forward to sharing with you.

Upcoming Events

This Sunday I will be continuing the series on 1 Corinthians 12. Even though President-Elect Barack Obama says he respects the right to bear arms, some folks are worried he could turn into, as the National Rifle Association puts it: "the most antigun president in history. "The president elect has… voted anti-gun in the past," said Arms Show owner Joe Wanenmacher. And that's sending Americans scrambling to gun shows and gun shops in record numbers unseen since Bill Clinton was elected President. "I would sort of suspect that the new President elect may have surpassed Mr. Clinton by generating even more gun sales than before," said gun shop owner Mack Woods. And sales have skyrocketed. "First four days of this month we matched November of last year," said gun shop owner Rodney Eschberger. "September was probably the biggest month I've had in 22 years." Background checks for gun buyers in October were up 15 percent over October last year. Some gun shops had to have extra employees come in because of the crush on Election Day.

Let's Start Building New Bathrooms?

A conservative activist is expressing alarm over president-elect Barack Obama's plan to expand a Clinton-era executive order that provides special protections for federal employees based on their sexual behavior.
The Obama-Biden transition team has included both "sexual orientation" and "gender identity" in its non-discrimination policy for applicants for employment in the incoming Obama administration. President Bush, much to the chagrin of many social conservatives, did not overturn Bill Clinton's executive order prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. However, the Clinton order does not address so-called gender identity.

Word of Obama's planned executive order has excited his allies on the left. Christopher Anders, senior legislative counsel with the American Civil Liberties Union, says "president-elect Obama and vice president-elect Biden, by explicitly rejecting the bigotry and intolerance of the past, are committing that gay, lesbian, and transgender professionals can serve in government without fear of discrimination."

Peter LaBarbera, president of Americans for Truth About Homosexuality, says Obama's new non-discrimination policy will be an "open door" for gender-confused and cross-dressing federal employees.

"What's the Obama administration going to do to protect women in federal restrooms?" the activist asks. "Since men [wearing] dresses apparently are going to be protected under gender-identity provisions, what about the women in the restrooms in the White House and other federal buildings? What's going to be done to protect their rights?"

LaBarbera even wonders if there is going to have to be a new federal outlay for the building of new "gender-free, transgender restrooms."

The president-elect has been a supporter of a version of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) that offers special protections for transgender employees.

Christmas in November

As you know, Barack Obama promised Planned Parenthood (PP) during his campaign that the first thing he would do when elected would be to sign the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA). This legislation would prohibit states from "interference with a woman's right to terminate a pregnancy prior to viability or . . . after viability where termination is necessary to protect the life or health of the woman." Basically, if passed, FOCA would nullify all existing state restrictions on abortion, including waiting periods and parental consent laws. Obama also pledged to appoint Supreme Court justices based on his agenda and not their personal qualifications as impartial judges. This is pertinent because according to the ,the judges likely to leave during Obama's administration are John Paul Stevens, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and David Souter. Stevens will probably be the first to retire because he's the oldest, turning 88 this year. In Obama's own words, he will surely appoint people of like mind, assuring us that he wants to put "people on the bench who have enough empathy, enough feeling for what ordinary people are going through." So much for the Constitution. Soon, Obama will take the office of president, and who do you think will be one of the first organizations in line to remind Obama of his promise? LifeSite says that besides the FOCA legislation, PP will be looking for money for their programs and taxpayer funding for abortion itself. There is little doubt that Obama will be more than happy to grant their every wish. In fact, PP probably thinks it's Christmas in November with the election of Obama, and can hardly wait 'til he takes office so they can start collecting on his promises to them. So, what can pro-lifers do in these circumstances? There are some great suggestions in LifeSite's article. Those with pro-life convictions must continue to act on those convictions. We must continue to be a presence outside of abortion centers in order to let women know that there is a "choice" beyond abortion. We must continue to help women who come to our crises pregnancy centers with counseling and baby cribs. We must let our remaining friends in the House and Senate know that we expect them, although outnumbered, to stand and fight for Life. Unless the Party of Abortion can muster 60 votes in the Senate, the Freedom of Choice Act will be a dead letter. These are all great suggestions, and the one thing I would add to these ideas is to pray. Prayer is a very powerful weapon against abortion and one that we often neglect in favor of activism. We should pray not only for women who are contemplating abortion, but remember the ones who have already had an abortion and are suffering. These women need our help, as well. The emotional trauma of having an abortion has to be overwhelming, and these women need to know that God loves them no matter what they've done. The closing sentence of LifeSite's article leaves readers with one final thought - over 50 million lives have been lost in America from abortion, so we need to work even harder to show the abortion movement and PP for the anti-child, anti-women movement that it is.

Journalism Has Died

A media analyst says MSNBC host Chris Matthews effectively admitted yesterday he was an unpaid member of Barack Obama's press office.

<storybody></storybody>
Matthews appeared Thursday on MSNBC's Morning Joe with Joe Scarborough and was asked for his opinion about Congressman Rahm Emanuel's initial public reluctance to accept the position as chief of staff for president-elect Obama. Would the Gay community then be saying "Well it's the will of the people...you can't overturn the will of the people!" What a bunch of hypocrites!
READ THIS!
LOS ANGELES - Homosexuals and their supporters in California are vowing to fight the passage of a state constitutional amendment that defines marriage as only between a man and a woman. Even as the last votes were being counted, the American Civil Liberties Union and other opponents of Proposition 8 filed a challenge with the state Supreme Court. They contended that it cannot be used to undermine one group's access to rights enjoyed by other citizens. Proposition 8, which appeared on Tuesday ballot and passed with 52 percent of the vote, overrides that court ruling by defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman. Thirty states now have adopted such measures, but the California vote marks the first time a state took away same-sex "marriage" after it had been legalized.
Exit polls on Tuesday revealed dramatic demographic gaps in the homosexual-marriage vote. While about six in 10 voters under 30 opposed the ban, about the same proportion of those 65 and older supported it. There were sharp racial discrepancies as well. Even as black voters overwhelmingly backed Barack Obama -- a homosexual-rights supporter -- in the presidential race, about seven in 10 of them voted against same-sex marriage, compared with about half of white voters.

Some Thoughts on "The Shack"

I first learned of this book while listening to a sermon on the Trinity in May of 2008. Since then I have heard very little concerning this book. There was no urgency on my part to read it. Then my mother brought a copy to my house when she came to visit. I asked her opinion and was surprised that it was so different. This sparked my interest.
A little further background if you don't mind: I went to our local library and they had never heard of it. I asked for an inter-library loan, your library borrows the book from another library. Twice they called me for more information. They could not find a library that had it. My friend had gone to a discount store and found it for $10.00. I borrowed his copy and read it in two days. As I write this the library called me back again and the librarian said, "What is up with this book! Every library that we find that has it says that it is checked out and there is a waiting list 5-10 people long." Amazing. Let me give my 2 cents. That is the actual value of the opinion. People may say that the story line is good with some theological hurtles to cross. I say that the hurtles are too many and too contrary to scripture to allow for that. God takes on the form of a woman in the 5th or 6th chapter. The Bible says that God is not a man and there are no images of God. This is what idolatry is. God does not want us to worship an image. Also if God were a female in form or attributes why did Jesus refer to God as a Father and not a mother. To the credit of the book the author makes this case at the end. But it comes after God was portrayed as a woman for all of the events of the book. This is not a writer displaying literary license. It is blatantly going against what is in scripture. Fiction or not, if this book is touching as many people as it appears to be than this is a great discredit to the author and he is purposely misleading people. The book also touches on how the Trinity communicates and functions as our one and only God. This is a mountainous task. One could only fail. The author describes the relationship of the Trinity in a way that cannot be found in the Bible. It is a beautiful description but that does not make it right. Mr. Young states that the Trinity has no hierarchy. This is interesting knowing that Jesus said that he was sent by the Father. Furthermore Jesus says that he will send the Holy Spirit. In Genesis it is the Father that says "let us make man in our image". I confess that I do not understand how it works. I only know through reading the Bible that there is some type of deference among the Trinity and we all know what it is. We baptize people in recognition of that deference: God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. There is equality in the Trinity just as there is equality in a marriage. But in a marriage God sets the husband as the head of the home. This does not reduce the wife in society but it does give order in union. I will stop here. For purpose of brevity I may not have made a good case for my thoughts. William Young took on a huge task. I do not criticize his writing style or the way that he attempts to address topics of the day. I only wish that he had done a better job of sticking to the obvious things in Scripture for an accurate portrayal of the Trinity. The only reason this would become the next "Pilgrims Progress" would be through the ignorance that some may have of the Bible.

The Blessed Truth

The truth is I’m mostly ineffectual. I sin. I mess things up. Often, I can’t fully live up to even the mediocre goals I set for myself. In the midst of a life of discovering over and over that, yet again, I am not the man, the husband, the son, the pastor or the Christian I would love to be. So here it is...many feel there must be something that they can do to achieve the ultimate spiritual medallion. God’s Word says He removed my sin from me as far as the east is from the west (Ps. 103:12). Elsewhere Scripture states that while I was still a sinner Christ died for me. That sums it up. As a Christian do I want to systematically destroy myself? No. At work in me I see the grace of God. I see the love of Jesus through the OT fulfilled in the NT; were it not for grace where would I be? Where would you be? Jesus transformed my heart causing the desires of humanity to decrease and a love for the Spiritual to increase. May it ever continue. I love serving the Lord Jesus Christ!

Say What To Who!?

Meeting people can be overwhelming when you walk away from post service chat time trying to remember the names of the seventeen people you just met and are now going to grab a a cup of coffee with. But as risky as it is, meeting people is intrinsic to community. And community is intrinsic to what it is to be the Body Of Christ, to be The Church. Paul urges us in Ephesians 4 to be unified in the Body of Christ through the Spirit. This unity is found in the bonds of love, peace and grace given to us by Jesus. We seek relationship with each other because Jesus seeks a relationship with us, we love and forgive each other because Jesus loves and forgives us, we show grace to each other because Jesus shows grace to us, we find satisfaction in community because the Trinity is wholly satisfied within Himself. Community is the means that God uses to sanctify us, to equip us, to teach us, all for the purpose of growing in Christ-likeness to better reflect His radiant glory. I'm not looking to slam these events. I just don't understand the Christian need for the fix.
These events do not have great teaching. There is, for the most part, no guidance. But most people don't go to these events for the teaching. They go to get, receive, or even take something away. In the Bible Jesus cast demons out that were making people shake and do unruly things. If someone was acting in an way that was disturbing to look at they were brought to Jesus and he delivered them. Interesting. What Jesus was casting out of people our current "Christian" culture runs to as a sign of the "move of the Spirit". If you think that acting like a person out of control is a blessing from God I encourage you to read Daniel chapter 4. I don't think that the king here was receiving a blessing from God, do you?

The Well & Beyond

This was a trip to dedicate a water well for some orphans. It turned out to be so much more. When we arrived the children were so welcoming. They were ready to laugh and play with us. They loved to sing and learn. I was amazed at how smart they were. I was touched to learn that I was the one that was going to be blessed.
We brought games, jump rope, bubbles, puppets, skits, crafts, volley balls, soccer balls, and a lot of love. I was thankful for our teenage boys that came. Josiah, Matt, and Brandon played with the children non-stop for 8 days. Every chance they had our boys were with the children. This was an element that made our team very tangible to the orphans. We were not there just to minister from a far. We were there to bring them love that they could remember and I feel that it was successful. There were many tears upon our departure, both from the team and the children. That will leave a lasting memory with me.
There was a full day that was dedicated to a conference for the children. This day was set up very much like a VBS would run here in the states. Allie McCray did a great job of organizing this day. She had the entire team working together to bless and minister to the children. Allie left such an impression that Pastor John Okinda asked her to come back next year and do it for a week! She said okay and the time is being worked out as this is being written.
I will do these posts as installments. If I don't it will be too long to write and read. I want to thank all of my church family and extended friends that prayed for us while we were gone. It was truly felt and appreciated.

Sum It Up

Back from Kenya...what an amazing trip. The team has assembled. The give-aways have been streaming in. What a blessing to be a part of such a journey.
This journey has many small stories and life changing events that led up to this moment. But for the purpose of brevity I have just one that I will share. In October of 2007 I was driving Pastor John Okinda on the back roads of Northwestern PA taking him from one speaking engagement to another. I looked at him and felt impressed to ask him what it was that the people in his town needed the most. Thinking that it would be food, clothing, buildings or something along those lines I was ready to offer the assistance of our church no matter what he said. As he began to speak about a "great" need that his people had I was floored at how basic it was. He said, "Pastor Phil, what my people need the most is clean drinking water." He explained that the water was a major contributor to their disease and early death rate. They have many problems that drinking clean water would solve. I could feel the tangible presence of God urging me to join with him in prayer that this would come to pass.
A few miles down the road I looked at him and spoke a sentence that would change my faith and my ambition for his ministry forever. I said, "Pastor John I know that God will provide this well through Grace Fellowship church and we will see this well drilled within a short time." Spontaneously we began to thank the Lord for this and we both prayed aloud thanking Him. My next question was, "Well John, what have I just committed myself to?" The cost for the well is $20,000.00! Wow...I pastor a congregation of 120. That is about 45 - 50 families. This is a major deal! This must be something that the Lord wants me to coordinate within the community, certainly this is too big for our own fellowship.
Today I write this posting 4 days before a team of 7 from our church and community leave to dedicate a well that is already drilled, flowing with water, and PAID IN FULL. From October 2007 to the first week in March 2008 our church members contributed $20,000.00 for this project. That is above their tithe and above their offering. None of our church's finances were affected. We still paid our bills and operated our facility. God is the God of Supply.
I pray that you would join with us in prayer support for this effort. We are leaving April 10th. This is a trip of great importance to us. I look forward to sharing this trip with you. I have set up a page on Facebook that will allow me to post emails and photos while we are there. The group is called "Kenya Trip 2008". Please feel free to join this group and stay current with our trip.

Changing Times, Unchanging God

James 1:17 - "Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows."

This month for our unity meeting we had Diane Gramley from American Family Association come and share. She gave some background on the organization and then started sharing about issues that face us locally and nationally.
Locally Diane has been working to inform city councils that they can have an ordnance concerning adult bars and bookstores. In Titusville the ministerium has been working toward this goal. At their monthly meeting pastors looked over the wording of a proposal that will be going to our city council within the next few months.
The issues that face the church in this millennium are not new. Families have had to deal with an aggressive world ever since the beginning. Media has introduced a greater challenge though. Through TV, movies, and music seeds are being planted every day that desensitize this generation.
This is what brought the "need" for a film like "The Passion of the Christ". The current generation was not moved by the story of Jesus, they needed to see it in living color, in every detail. The film touched thousands of lives and I remember the push by churches to get people to see it. The tragedy was in the need for graphic violence in order to get the unchurched to look our way. I understand reaching the world, being current, and in touch with our times. But the question must be asked: How far are Christians willing to go to reach a "lost and dying generation"? The Bible is filled with violence and war. Are we to take those parts of scripture and parade them in front of the unchurched or unsaved in the name of evangelism?
This may not be a popular point of view. I am a come-as-you-are pastor as much as the next guy. I believe that we need to reach the lost, but at what cost? Preaching Jesus has worked for centuries. The Gospel offers much that this world needs to hear. How to live as Christ-Followers, who to marry, how to vote, how to raise children, how to handle money, and list goes on. If we are to impact the generation that God has placed us in it will only be through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
This is not an anti-relevant ministry article. I am praying that the church will not buy into the smoke, illusion and drama to become another side show. Our quest for relevance is how we show the average American family the importance of having Jesus in our lives. How have we changed? How do we approach the struggles of life? Is being a good person all it takes to spend eternity with our Creator? Ask these questions of yourself every day and encourage someone else to journey with you.

Coming Soon

I will be posting to my blog soon.
